The University of Calgary has announced to have planned a Celebration of Life on Wednesday to honour the lives lost during the recent Calgary stabbing. Friends, family, students and faculty from Calgary’s post-secondary community are anticipated to attend and convene for one last time to celebrate and say goodbye to five young people.

It’s been almost two weeks when Lawrence Hong, Josh Hunter, Kaiti Perras, Zack Rathwell and Jordan Segura were cruelly murdered while attending a party to celebrate the last day of class at the University of Calgary. In addition to other attendants, school communities from the Alberta College of Art and Design, Mount Royal University and the University of Calgary are anticipated to gather at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium. Organizers have announced that doors will open at 2 p.m., when free parking will be available but attendants are encouraged to carpool, while the service is scheduled to begin around 3 p.m.

Officials report that mourners are expected to pay tribute to the lives lost, while taking comfort and drawing strength from collective stories. They will also reflect on their personalities, passions and interests. Among the most notable dignitaries attending the event are Premier Dave Hancock and several of his cabinet ministers from inside the Alberta Legislature. 22-year-old Matt de Grood is the primary suspect in the stabbing who is charged with five counts of first degree murder in relation to their deaths. He’s currently undergoing a psychiatric assessment at the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Centre.
