Toronto’s embattled mayor who is currently on a leave to seek professional treatment for his addiction issues, Rob Ford, is now facing an ever increasing number of calls to resign from his position. In a long-coming announcement made by mayor on Thursday, he revealed his decision to step aside amid reports of a new video that allegedly shows him smoking crack cocaine and an audio recording that seems to capture Mr. Ford in a bar making explicit comments about mayoral candidate Councillor Karen Stintz.

The mayor’s brother, his staunchest defender and re-election campaign manager, Councillor Doug Ford, mentioned in a press conference later that he welcomed Rob’s decision to seek professional help with “a sense of relief.” He said that “I love my brother. I’ll continue to stand by my brother and his family throughout this difficult journey.” Consequently, the mayor reportedly left his suburban home with an oversized suitcase on Thursday, without any formal indication about when he will be back. Mr. Ford’s leave has come almost a year after he first became engulfed in a drug controversy.

Many at City Hall took a sigh of relief on Thursday, thanking Ford for finally facing his personal issues publicly and seeking help, even if he was vague about his plans. However, in light of growing evidence of the mayor’s continued bad behaviour, several also remarked the mayor’s leave to be too little, too late from a man who brought too much criticism and controversy to the city’s management and became the focus of international headlines.
