University of Saskatchewan president, Ilene Busch-Vishniac, has revealed that she was not satisfactorily consulted before firing the outspoken professor, Robert Buckingham, last week. Although Busch-Vishniac admitted that she is responsible for the actions of all members of the university administration, she alleged that decisions regarding faculty termination were made by now-former provost Brett Fairbairn, who voluntarily resigned on late Monday before the university board of governors convened an emergency meeting.

According to Busch-Vishniac “Brett took ownership because, in fact, he did act in haste and in error without adequate consultation with me and with others who might have prevented that error.” She alleged that Fairbairn’s made the error because his job was “incredibly hectic” and the university was moving very swiftly to implement its controversial TransformUS plan. She explained that “occasionally, in order to try to move quickly, things move a little too fast,” adding that “it’s important to the university that we make sure that every issue is getting appropriate consideration and that we slow down where it is necessary. That includes the TransformUS process.”

In addition to that, Busch-Vishniac confessed that the TransformUS process has been “driven hard and fast.” The president straightforwardly alleged that she “is not planning on resigning,” despite many students and faculty calling for just that. Busch-Vishniac said she is optimistic the university’s tarnished reputation will be eventually restored. She said that “If I have the opportunity to continue, I think once we put some of this kerfuffle behind us, we’re in a position to continue to move forward, to have this university in this great province recognized for the excellence it offers in many areas.”
