Moncton streets were lit with candles on Friday evening as hundreds of residents gathered for a quite vigil in honour of the three deceased RCMP officers in a recent shooting rampage. Entrance of the Codiac RCMP headquarters in downtown Moncton could be seen flooded with flowers, balloons and messages of support as the local community came together to grieve the tragic loss of three young officers.

In a press conference held on Friday morning, Commanding Officer of the RCMP in New Brunswick, Roger Brown, alleged that the organization “lost three incredible members.” He confirmed that the deceased included 32-year-old police dog handler, Const. David Ross, while has left behind his six months pregnant wife and their young son. The other two officers were 45-year-old Const. Fabrice Georges Gevaudan from Boulogne-Billancourt, France, who was posted to the Codiac RCMP detachment in 2008 and worked as a general duty police officer and 40-year-old Const. Douglas James Larche who was posted to three RCMP detachments since 2002, most recently in Codiac where he worked in highway patrol and as a general duty officer.

In his final remarks, Brown said that “fortunately most people will never have to experience what our officers have gone through in the past couple of days.” He alleged that the RCMP is now tasked with “rebuilding the sense of security and calmness” that was in Moncton prior to the police shootings. He added that “thankfully this morning we can all go back home and move about in this city freely and with a sense of confidence that was there before.”
