On Monday, October 18, 2010 at approximately 1 p.m., police were called after a Notre Dame high school student was seen with a handgun hidden in his waistband underneath his shirt.
Durham Regional Police Officers arrived from West Division and the portable was surrounded, other portables in the vicinity were evacuated and the school was placed into a lockdown. DRPS Tactical Support officers arrived at scene and called the suspect out of the class where he was arrested without incident or injury at 3:15 p.m. A search of the portable revealed a loaded Glock-style pellet gun inside the student’s gym bag.
There were 13 other students in the portable at the time but there is no indication they were threatened in any way or even knew about the alleged weapon. The DRPS would like to thank school officials and other emergency services for their quick response and co-operation during this incident.
