Missing Liknes Family’s ‘Person of interest’ in Court Again

As authorities still search a rural area northeast of Airdrie for the missing trio, namely Nathan O’Brien and his grandparents, a ‘person of interest’ in the case is scheduled to appear in court on unrelated charges. 54-year-old Douglas Garland was arrested last week and has been in police custody since he was charged with identity theft. He is anticipated to face more charges related to that offence.

Garland has had trouble with the law quite a number of times, starting from the charges that stemmed from him having a drug operation on his farm. However, it did not end there and he spent much of the 90s fleeing those charges as he lived under the name of a 14-year-old from Cardston, Matthew Hartley, killed in a car crash in 1990. Finally, the authorities caught him in finally caught and he had to serve time for that offence in 1999. At the time of his arrest now, Garland again a bank card bearing the same name, Matthew Hartley.

Garland is a ‘person of interest’ in the case because his parents own the farm where scores of police are currently searching for the trio. The investigators were reached the farm after looking for a green pickup truck, which they believe was spotted near the Liknes’ home around the time of their disappearance. Furthermore, there is another connection between Garland and the Liknes family as his sister, Patti Garland, is the common law partner of Alvin Liknes’ brother, Allen.
