The news of 31-year-old teacher’s death came as the least unexpected news for the victim’s family at Sunnybrook Hospital on Tuesday morning. Thereafter, Abshir Hassan’s shocked family gathered at his father’s home in Maple, trying to make sense of the sudden, incomprehensible loss. The gathering including his father, siblings, cousins and friends, all of whom were pushed into grief by a senseless death.

Hassan’s 20-year-old cousin, Yusuf Abubakar, remembered that “we sat together, talked about how much of a good person he was. We talked about a lot of the memories that we had of him.” He added that “in our family, he is known for bringing people together.” His friends claim that Hassan was a humble man whose long-time passion was teaching. Shockingly, he was gunned down outside his Lawrence Heights apartment building on Tuesday morning in what police is calling a mistaken hit. The lead investigator on the case, Det. Sgt. Steve Ryan, stressed that “by all indications this guy was not the target, this was not a hit on him,” adding that “it would appear that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

In addition to Hassan’s death, the gunfire also hit an unidentified 22-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman, both of whom are still struggling with serious injuries in hospital as of late Tuesday. It was revealed later that Hassan only left his apartment building to move his car so he wouldn’t get a ticket. Emergency responders rushed Hassan to hospital, where he died Tuesday morning.
