Prone to controversy, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford managed to grab the news headlines once again in less than an hour into Wednesday’s council meeting. Reporters were quick to find Mayor Ford to be the only member of council not standing to applaud for city staff and volunteers that worked on World Pride Toronto. Snubbing the mayor, Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam stated that “Rob Ford once again stands alone in a corner pouting by himself and that’s where he belongs, that’s where he should stay.”

The mayor failed to attend a 10-day World Pride festival this year since it ended a day before the mayor was to return to the city from his stint in rehab. Although the mayor did clap briefly, he didn’t stand and applaud along with other councillors as they saluted World Pride officials. The mayor’s reaction stirred up negative reaction on social media.

This is not the first time that Ford messed up with the city’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) community. Since he took control of the office, Mayor Ford has been repeatedly refusing to march in the city’s Pride parade.  The only openly gay member of council, Wong-Tam, alleged that Ford has “shown repeatedly he just doesn’t care for this community.” She said that “it’s really quite unfortunate that Mayor Ford again is just not decent in his approach, he just couldn’t even bother to stand up, he couldn’t even fake it.” Wong-Tam added that “I think he has just been very consistent from trying to rip down the rainbow flag, from not attending the Pride marches, he has done everything he can to destroy his relationships with the LGBT community.”
