The Alberta government’s plan to change a decades-old slogan from its licence plates has received sheer criticism from residents who demand that the province’s lawmakers consult the public before approving the redesign without any discussion. A long list of polls, surveys and petitions signify growing dissatisfaction over the provincial government’s move to eliminate “Wild Rose Country” and replace it with “alberta.ca,” which is the government’s website address.

According to a petition posted on change.org, Lifelong Albertan Caitlyn Madlener urged the government to leave the slogan unchanged. According to Madlener, the new design is “generic” and uninspiring, whereas the current slogan is better and pays homage to the Alberta’s heritage. She mentioned that “it’s been on our licence plates for 30 years and honestly, it hasn’t bothered anyone.” Furthermore, Madlener alleged that “it’s what our province represents, it’s our provincial flower, it’s what we are.”

In her petition, Madlener highlights that her petition is not politically motivated and in fact people from all political stripes are adding their signature to it. She says that “it’s not necessarily a political party issue, it’s an Alberta issue.” However, one political party has openly criticized the incoming change and demanded its disapproval. Alberta’s official opposition, The Wildrose Party, has accused the government of only changing the slogan as a punishment to the party. Wildrose is now conducting their own online poll, which consults Albertans about their preference among the current slogan, “Strong and Free,” “Alberta.ca” or “TravelAlberta.com.”
