MP Dean Del Mastro has recently announced that he will urge the speaker of the House of Commons to investigate the potentially defamatory changes made to his Wikipedia page, which he knows to have been made by someone using a computer on the parliamentary network.
According to a revision made on the Peterborough MP’s page on the online encyclopedia, through a House of Commons Internet address on Tuesday, his profession was changed from an “auto dealer” to “Dealer of Used Cars with Bent Frames, Perjurer.” Previously, another change from the same address called him a “Used Car Dealer, formerly sold crippled mules.” The perjury reference was updated a few days after Del Mastro testified in his ongoing trial on charges claiming that he overspent in his campaign during 2008 election. In his remarks, Del Mastro alleged that the edits of his entry were “unfortunate and hurtful.” He vowed that “I will raise it with the Speaker’s Office for their review as I don’t believe this is an appropriate use of HOC computers or an appropriate use of time paid for by the taxpayers of Canada.”
In addition that, Del Mastro clarified that none of his staff made the subsequent edits of the page that reversed the objectionable changes. He elucidated that “I have never considered Wikipedia to be one of the social media platforms of the office. I can confirm that none of my staff have added, deleted or edited any content on the Wikipedia page.”
