Authorities have expressed their gratitude to volunteer searchers looking for the missing trio, who are now presumed as Calgary murder victims, but also feared that their efforts could harm an ongoing criminal investigation. An estimated 250 people appeared on Monday evening to conduct a grid search in the Airdrie area for clues on the disappearance and alleged murders of five-year-old Calgary boy Nathan O’Brien and his grandparents, Alvin and Kathryn Liknes.

Although murder charges have been laid in connection to the three deaths, police claims that it has yet to recover bodies. Whereas, close family members have stated to remain hopeful that their loved ones will turn up. A Calgary police spokesperson, Kevin Brookwell, stated that their investigators would prefer if residents only checked their own properties for irregularities. While praising the “amazing” effort to aid victims’ families, he said volunteers are essentially searching “blind,” whereas “we know what we’re looking for.” Brookwell added that “there are certain pieces to this file — certain pieces of evidence — that we specifically are looking for, and we have a pretty good idea where those items may be . . . this is the kind of information we can’t share.”

Airdrie RCMP Const., Jason Curtis, alleged that he worries that a volunteer searcher could stumble across something substantial, adding that it will be crucial to contain such information while efforts are made to notify the families. He said that “nobody wants to find out the ultimate fate of their loved one on Twitter,” adding “it’s definitely preferred that they leave the investigation to the police.
