Most of the passengers surviving a brutal accident of a coach headed to New York City for the weekend, as it sped off the highway and rolled onto its side, have begun arriving back in Quebec on late Friday evening. Out of the 54 survivors, almost 40 had returned via bus last night, while the majority of the rest were driven back to Quebec by family and friends after getting discharged from the hospitals near the crash site, i.e. close to North Hudson, New York.

The only casualty in the accident was of 14-year-old Chelssy Mercierm who died after ejecting from the bus because she got caught underneath the wreckage. Mercier was travelling with her mother for the weekend. Meanwhile, three passengers are still receiving treatment for non-fatal but serious injuries in a hospital and are all expected to survive. The bus having 55 passengers and one driver was owned by Autobus Fleur de Lys and chartered by the Jaimonvoyage tour company.

The crash is being investigated by the New York State Police. According to a statement issued by Maj. Richard Smith of the New York State Police, the investigators have initiated their inspection from the coach’s black box as it records the vehicle’s speed and other data. He explained that “we will be able to discern what may have been going on with the driver in terms of was he braking, was he using a turn signal, how fast was he going just prior to the collision.”
