The mayor of La Prairie, 51-year-old Lucie F. Roussel, has passed away in a dreadful incident suffering from multiple wasp stings at her cottage on Sunday afternoon. Sources confirmed that Roussel accidently stepped on a wasps’ nest on her property in the Eastern Townships and as a consequence of poking them, she received multiple wasps’ stings. Soon after the incident, Roussel was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital in Thetford Mines. It is unclear if the mayor had a known allergy to wasp stings.

Roussel was a career lawyer before she entered politics and got elected as a municipal councillor in 1999. It was not until 2005 that she became mayor of La Prairie and had kept the position since. Several municipal officials in the South Shore town of 24,000 residents have expressed remorse and were extremely saddened by her sudden death.

An official press release issued at 11:30 a.m. on Monday confirmed the news of mayor’s death and remembered her as “a visionary and dedicated woman” who was particularly dedicated to improving the lives of families in her community. It said that the mayor was an active member of several administrative councils and associations, including the Union of Quebec Municipalities. It was stated that “the town has lowered its flags to half-mast,” because “our thoughts are with (Roussel’s) family and the citizens of La Prairie.” Roussel is survived by her 18-year-old daughter and 19-year-old son. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
