Canada’s Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Niagara Falls, Rob Nicholson, and the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Steven Blaney, inaugurated the installation of NEXUS Project at Peace Bridge in Fort Erie on Monday. The two also highlighted three new features now available for people using NEXUS, Trusted Traveller and Trusted Trader programs.

The announcement on Monday coincided with the official opening of the eGate pilot-project, i.e. a project which will allow NEXUS users 24-hour accelerated passage at the Peace Bridge. It will become the third port in Canada where the program is accessible, while the other two crossings already offering this feature for travelers are in Quebec. However, The Peace Bridge will be the only crossing where new technology will be experimented as the NEXUS lane is not always equipped with a border guard. Consequently, Canada Border Services Agency staff will be able to interact with the occupants of vehicles remotely if necessary.

According to Nicholson, the program will be tested on a trial period for up to six-months and it is a “good fit” for Niagara. He alleged that “this is hugely important for the economy of this area,” explaining that “these improvements further enhance our trade relationship with our U.S. neighbours and highlight our shared commitment to a strong and effective border.” In addition to the full-day NEXUS program, trusted traders will also be allowed to import goods into Canada and apply for new benefits that are essentially designed to save them time and money.
