The couple accused in the killing of Saint Mary’s University 26-year-old student, Loretta Saunders, are facing a court case in a Halifax courtroom this morning. The two suspects, namely 26-year-old Blake Leggette and 28-year-old Victoria Henneberry, were charged with first-degree murder on Feb. 27, i.e. two weeks after Saunders reportedly disappeared from her Halifax apartment.

At the time of court hearing, almost two dozen Saunders family members and supporters were present in the court. However, the victim’s father, Clayton Saunders, has alleged that he will not be able to be present in the courtroom for most of the preliminary inquiry. He said that “I wouldn’t be able to handle it” because “Loretta’s death has taken a big toll on our family.” Only a few minutes after the hearing of the case got underway, one woman abruptly left the courtroom sobbing. The court hearing is anticipated to proceed throughout the week. In an usual move, the court has disallowed all liquids from the courthouse.

According to the police, Saunders is believed to have been killed on the day she was last seen at an apartment, which she once shared with the two accused of murder. Saunders’ body was later discovered in a wooded area off the Trans-Canada Highway in New Brunswick. An Inuit woman from Labrador, Saunders, focused her studies at SMU on missing and murdered aboriginal women.
