In order to justify its charges against suspended senator Mike Duffy, RCMP has alleged that Duffy wrongfully increased his travel claims for attending funerals. However, the charge sheet does not explain why he is the only being charged for bribery, fraud and breach of trust in connection to obtaining a $90,000 payment from Nigel Wright.

The Mounties confessed in April that there was unsatisfactory evidence to criminally charge Wright, i.e. the former chief of staff to Prime Minister Stephen Harper who gave that $90,000 personal cheque to Mr. Duffy, after Harper stressed that Duffy should repay the expenses that were embarrassing the government and Duffy claimed he was broke. However, the RCMP laid three charges against Duffy related to Wright’s $90,000 payment to him. The explanation is expected to come out when Duffy appears in court, which is something he says he is “keen” for. Meanwhile, Duffy has straightforwardly denied all criminal liabilities and has labeled all charges against him as a “monstrous political scheme” cooked up in the PMO.

The RCMP has officially summoned Duffy’s lawyer, Don Bayne, on Monday to ensure that Duffy appears in an Ottawa court on Sept. 16. The information to support the charge, filed by RCMP Cpl. Greg Horton, outlines the 31 charges announced last week. The document entails dates and specific numbers of the expense claims that Duffy filed to the Senate that are the focus of each charge.
