Former Surrey Sikh temple leader, Baldev Singh Kalsi, previously charged with attempted murder has now been charged with second-degree murder after his wife died in the hospital yesterday. Kalsi’s wife, Narinder Kalsi, was taken off of life support yesterday afternoon, after being found with serious injuries in her home last Sunday.

Police initially charged Mr. Kalsi with aggravated assault, however that charge was later beefed up to attempted murder in light of subsequent investigation. Now, the prosecution has announced to further upgrade the charge again and have him on trial for second-degree murder. 66-year-old Kalsi was the president of the Gurdwara Sahib Brookside temple, but he is now removed from this position in light of the charges against him.

Surrey City Councillor, Barinder Rasode, has alleged that the community is outraged about Narinder’s death and the possibility of her husband being involved. Rasode explained that “the accused is in a position of leadership in the community. And when we decide to serve, I think we are — and should be — treated with a higher standard. The accused is someone who has shown leadership in the community and has chosen to set an example for others.” It was added that the case is a tragedy on so many levels. Rosode elucidated that “it is a reminder that domestic abuse occurs at all ages in all communities and it is something we have to do a better job at eliminating in our community.”
