The province’s Special Investigations Unit has taken over a new case where a man received serious injuries during altercation with police in Newmarket and remains in hospital. York regional police officers reportedly responded to a 911 call that informed about gunshots being fired near an apartment building at 260 Davis Dr., near Lorne Avenue, just after midnight on Tuesday.

According to Sgt. Clint Whitney, upon arriving on the scene, officers reported that “they were confronted by a man who was armed with a handgun and that man advanced on the officers, [and] the officers discharged their firearms.” Consequently, the man was transported to hospital with serious injuries, and was conscious when he arrived. However, no police officers received any injuries during the incident. Meanwhile, province’s Special Investigations Unit has confirmed to be probing the incident.

According to one of the residents present in the apartment at the time, Brandon, “I heard three distinct bangs. It wasn’t no fireworks, it wasn’t anything else but a gunshot.” The SIU is mandated to explore reports involving death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault related to police officers. Although police had initially cordoned off the area and did not allow any vehicles out of the complex due to the investigation, it has now allowed residents in the area to retrieve their vehicles. Meanwhile, Lorne Avenue was closed between Davis Drive and Calgain Road, but reopened just after 7:30 a.m.
