Despite countless promises by the Senate to be more open and transparent in light of several ongoing spending scandals which have resulted in criminal charges against three of its own, The Upper Chamber is showing restraint. According to the documents filed in court on Monday, the RCMP presented list of charges against Senator Mike Duffy, citing 13 specific expense claims resulting in 16 of the 31 charges.

The RCMP elucidated that these questionable claims include charges for personal trips to funerals and related ceremonies, a makeup artist and personal trainer. Whereas on the other hand, Duffy has utterly maintained his innocence and insisted that he is looking forward to make his case in court. In an attempt to acquire details into the spending that triggered the charges against Duffy, Global News requested the Senate to reveal details of those 13 claims. However, the chief of public information of Senate, Francine Pressault, replied that “the information you are requesting is not publicly available.”

In response to a subsequent request highlighting that the sought information is public, Pressault reiterated that “the information you are requesting is not published information.” Considering that the request to acquire information might lead to a privacy issue, it was once again requested that the Senate conceal names from the documents, but release information including dates, locations and amounts intact. However, Pressault once again stated that “to answer your question,” “the information you are requesting is not published and currently is a matter before the courts. The Senate does not comment on matters before the courts.”
