The Balfour Collegiate Redmen has announced to have changed their name and hence will be playing with a different name this September. Regina Public Schools spokesman, Terry Lazarou, confirmed that a review was held this spring, which included members of the school community including its Elders Advisory Council, and found that the school should change the name since it can possibly be inferred as a derogatory connotation.

The debate about a Saskatoon school’s use of the term “Redmen” for its athletic team was already translating into a formal discussions at Balfour. However, Balfour’s logo did not depict an aboriginal person but is instead a red “B.” Lazarou alleged that “we’re quite pleased the school has decided it wants to be responsive to what the community wants.” According to a Balfour alumnus, Rodger Ross, he’s glad the school has decided to do the “right” thing by changing the name.

Whereas on the other hand, a former Balfour student who played on the football, basketball and baseball teams, Teale Orban, said that “I think that it’s important that all cultures are very much respected. … I think it’s important that no team is ever derogatory to somebody.” However, he added that “that being said, … I was always very proud to be a Redmen. It was very positive.” The school had kept Redmen name and red Balfour “B” logo since the 1930s because red was the colour students wore to distinguish themselves from kids from other schools.
