Quebec provincial police have allegedly seized one of the 28 burnt lead locomotive that were blazed in the Lac-Megantic freight-train disaster on Wednesday, before it could be auctioned off. The GE C-30-7 is scheduled to be sold off in Maine and Atlantic Railway (MMA) next month.

According to Illinois-based auctioneer, Adam Jokisch, the provincial police allegedly told his office on Wednesday to remove the 67-foot-long engine from the auction. Jokisch stated that “apparently, provincial police seized (the locomotive) for more investigation or for the trials.” The deadly accident resulted in numerous counts of criminal negligence causing death against an MMA train engineer and two colleagues, who are being held responsible in the derailment and explosion that killed 47 people last July in Canada’s deadliest railway blast. In light of several wrongful death suits and massive insurance claims, MMA announced to file for bankruptcy last year and was later sold to the Central Maine & Quebec Railway (CMQ).

According to the buyer, it aims to purchase new locomotives to replace MMA’s aging equipment, placing the MMA’s ragtag fleet up for auction at a railway yard in Milo, Maine, on Aug. 5. As of Wednesday, there was at least one other locomotive involved in the Lac-Megantic disaster that was up for action.  The auctioneer has mentioned that though some of the units date back to 1976, their age won’t deter other railways or leasing companies. Jokisch wrote “locomotives, you can just keep replacing them and rebuilding them and keep reusing them.”
