Public Safety Minister, Steven Blaney, is anticipated to soon announce the new “Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act” later on Wednesday. Sources confirm that the new act implements several new laws that will limit the powers of provincial chief firearms officers, make all firearm licenses possession-and-acquisition (PAL) licenses and make it easier for legal gun owners to transport restricted firearms around their home province.

Several sources have confirmed that Blaney will explain that “these measures would streamline licensing and eliminate needless red tape for law-abiding gun owners.” Aiming to keep guns away from those convicted of domestic violent offences, Blaney vows that “my foremost priority is keeping the public safe, through common-sense policies.” Previously, Tories boldly sparred the controversial long gun registry in 2012 and allowed several provincial chief firearms officers to exercise additional powers. Consequently, numerous gun owners complained that the new clause allows provincial chief firearms officers to attach “any reasonable condition” they see fit to gun licenses, business licenses and permits to transport restricted guns. However, that power is now being retracted from them in the new act.

Furthermore, the act allows restricted firearms owners to transport their weapons around their province with a single licence. Currently, the law asks for new paperwork each time a restricted weapon is needed to be transported to a destination other than the shooting range at which the owner is a member. Several gun rights advocates had long opposed the necessity of excessive paperwork, alleging that it did not help in improving public safety.
