Owners of a seniors’ residence that caught immense fire in January, causing 32 deaths, have announced their intention to sue the local municipality for $3.8 million. The owners, namely Irene Plante and Roch Bernier, and their insurance company have mentioned that the town of L’Isle-Verte failed to provide necessary safety measures to avert the Residence du Havre tragedy on Jan 23.

The rescue operators had only managed to recover twenty-seven bodies from the rubble while five bodies still remain unaccounted to date. According to the police, it is trying to identify the remaining victims through DNA testing. The lawsuit filed on Tuesday in a Quebec City court claims that the residence owners spent five years asking the town to draft an emergency plan but the officials failed to respond each time. Additionally, the owners blamed the tragedy on tensions between the town and its own firefighters as plaintiffs point out that only one fire truck was on scene almost 15 minutes after the fire broke out. In addition to that, the lawsuit highlights that there was no ladder truck and the town took too long to call for help from better-equipped municipalities.

The grave allegations are yet to be proven in court and a spokeswoman for L’Isle Verte have denied to comment on an active lawsuit. In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs seek compensation for their building and reimbursement for the insurance company, which paid out almost $2.1 million. L’Isle-Verte is located 230 km northeast of Quebec City.
