Toronto Police have confirmed on Wednesday that the family of an 18-year-old man shot and killed by Toronto police last summer, Sammy Yatim, have officially launched an $8-million lawsuit alleging that force used against Mr. Yatim was “excessive,” “unreasonable” and “not justifiable by law.” Toronto Police revealed that the suit was filed in February and includes Police Chief Bill Blair, Const. James Forcillo, two other unnamed officers and the Toronto Police Services Board as defendants.

Toronto Police officers shot Mr. Yatim fatally while he was alone inside an empty streetcar, yielding a knife, on Dundas Street at about midnight on July 27. According to several eyewitness videos of the police shooting, a total of nine shots were fired, out of which three were fired initially and the rest followed after almost five seconds later. Thereafter, almost 30 seconds later, a Taser was deployed too. The empty streetcar was surrounded by at least a dozen police officers at the time of the shooting, however SIU only confirmed to be investigating Const. Forcillo, who faces a second-degree murder charge for the teen’s death.

Sources confirm that Yatim’s mother, Sahar Bahadi, and his sister, Sarah Yatim, are formal plaintiffs of the lawsuit, which states that Mr. Yatim was experiencing a period of emotional disturbance at the time he was shot. The case is being handled by a renowned lawyer, Julian Falconer, who is known best for representing families of people killed by police or in custody is handling the case.
