A dead body discovered from in front of Humpty’s restaurant’s building in Calgary’s Montgomery area has triggered a homicide investigation on Thursday morning. Homicide unit investigators could be seen combing the area around as blood pooled out from the body, lying near the restaurant entrance, covered in a blanket.

Staff Sgt. Jason Bobrowich confirmed that the EMS were contacted to inform about a collapsed male in the 1600 block of 46 Street NW at about 6:45 a.m. He explained that both EMS and police responded to the scene and found the man on the ground, where he was pronounced dead. The investigators also discovered a backpack and blanket lying next to the building just metres from the body, which gave growth to the suspicion that the alleged victim was homeless or transient. Another homeless man reportedly approached police and offered to help them identify the victim after taking closer look at the belongings.

Local residents claim that the area is often frequented by transient people at this time of year. One of the residents living in the Montgomery area for decades explained that “right now, after the Stampede, we have a lot of leftover transients that were kicked out of the downtown core.” Bobrowich confirmed that the death was “deemed as potentially suspicious” and the medical examiner confirmed it as a suspicious death. He elucidated that “therefore our homicide unit has been engaged.”
