In an iconic terrorism case judgment on Thursday, Ontario Superior Court Justice Deena Baltman gave a strict lecture against “terror tourists,” i.e. those leaving Canada to join militant groups abroad, as she ordered maximum sentence against a Somali-Canadian arrested while trying to leave Toronto to join Al-Shabab. A 28-year-old former security guard, Mohamed Hersi, was given 10 years in prison for attempting to join a terrorist group and counselling another to join him.

According to Justice Baltman, “terrorists are the worst kinds of cowards because they deliberately target innocent members of the public who are not prepared for combat” adding that “the message needs to be sent out that anyone who aspires to become part of such evil must pay a heavy price.” Judge Baltman further mentioned that terrorism is “particularly reprehensible,” and ordered that Hersi would stand ineligible to apply for parole until he serves at least half of his sentence, which is stricter rather than the usual one-third.

Hersi’s uncle, Mohamed Tabit, mentioned that his nephew is “devastated” to hear the sentence and “it is very harsh and we were not expecting this kind of decision from the judge, but we still believe in the Canadian justice.” Mr. Tabit alleged that “as a family we see that this is a political trial and nothing to do with the justice system. We believe this has been orchestrated and fabricated by the police…. An innocent person is in custody now.”
