Southern Ontario faced strong storms on Friday evening, accompanied by torrential rainfall, one confirmed funnel cloud and tornado warnings throughout almost all major cities. Environment Canada announced to have had imposed tornado warnings at around 7 p.m., which eventually covered Kitchener, London, Goderich, Grand Bend and Sarnia. Whereas, Windsor to Kingston received additional severe thunderstorm watches and warnings.

According to The Canadian Press, Environment Canada is anticipated to dispatch a team to the Grand Bend area to probe reports of a possible tornado spotted on the Lake Huron shore. According to a statement issued on Monday morning by Weather Network Meteorologist, Kelly Sonnenburg, “trees were brought down with the storms through Grand Bend, and lots of power outages were reported.” An estimate of 6,300 customers are calculated to be left without power, majority of which are in the London area. In addition to the winds, the rain has also caused severe problems for some areas, triggering numerous road closures due to increased water levels. Sonnenburg reported that “radar indicated heavy rainfall with these cells, and the northern Greater Toronto Area, including Vaughan and Markham, saw localized flooding.”

Reports confirm that a few flights in the region had to be cancelled or delayed due to the rain and winds, while Pearson Airport confirmed a ten-degree drop in temperatures. Currently, there are no watches or warnings in effect in southern Ontario, since the system is now gradually moving eastward and is expected to cause trouble during the morning commute for drivers in the G.T.A. and southwest.
