TTC has announced to fully close the intersection of Spadina Avenue and Dundas Street West, for two weeks starting from Monday, in all directions due to construction activities. The announcement revealed that the City of Toronto and the TTC have planned to carry out major construction on watermains, streetcar tracks, roads, and sidewalks in the area. Additionally, the Phase 2 of the project will commence from July 28 to Aug. 11 and the TTC will upgrade its switches and tracks as part of ongoing maintenance.

TTC spokesman, Brad Ross, explained that “what the TTC needs to do is pull out all of that track and [the] switches and rebuild the intersection with new track.” He added that “the last time that was done was 1996.” The authorities have elucidated that during the two-week closure, motorists en route from east on Dundas towards Spadina will be diverted at Bathurst Street, whereas westbound traffic on Dundas will be rerouted at University Avenue. On the other hands, drivers going towards north on Spadina to approach Dundas will be diverted through Queen Street West, while southbound traffic on Spadina will take College Street.

Meanwhile, city officials have promised to ensure access to local businesses during the entire two-week closure. The area had been partially closed off since July 14 to replace a watermain. The TTC also plans to retrofit the streetcar platform at Spadina Station to accommodate its new low-floor streetcars. Later on, Phase 3 will begin on Aug. 11 and include a partial closure of the intersection.
