Alberta’s opposition parties have demanded resignation from Finance Minister, Doug Horner, in light of the Auditor General’s report that revealed former premier, Alison Redford, abused government aircraft for “personal and partisan” purposes. According to the opposition, since Finance Minister Horner’s office is responsible for Alberta’s Air Transportation Services (ATS) Program overall, it should resign over its inefficiency to report misuse.

Wildrose critic, Kerry Towle, stressed that the government is in “desperation mode” and doing “everything they can to convince Albertans” that Alison Redford alone abused the planes. According to Towle, “this report tells the story of a government that’s completely off the rails.” It was explained that there is “no oversight on how money has been spent. No backbone to question decisions or stand up to power and absolutely no regard right across the board for the money and resources entrusted to them by taxpayers of Alberta… Mr. Horner has completely and utterly failed to do his job and the Auditor General’s report confirms as much.”

Previously in March, Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith inquired Premier Dave Hancock, Horner and other senior cabinet ministers about partisan flights, which Hancock flatly denied. Now, the Alberta NDP claims that the PC cabinet ministers “lied to the House” and “this is proof that Redford did not act alone. All cabinet ministers are implicated and there is a unified effort to cover it up.” NDP critic, Deron Bilous, pointed out that “the PCs have become so comfortable spending public dollars on themselves that they’re not even covering their tracks anymore.”
