Renowned television personality, Seamus O’Regan, has announced his intent to run for the Liberal nomination in the district of St. John’s South-Mount Pearl. However, the timing of his announcement is deemed significant since it was made only a day after well-known businessman and anticipated forerunning contender, Jim Burton, declared that he will not seek the nomination. Burton admitted that the timing is just “very coincidental.”

Mr. Burton stated that “I’m just hearing about it for the first time. I’m in Labrador here today. I’ve been a month with this decision. It’s not something I made lightly to step down. It’s purely business for me.” O’Regan earned his reputation as a CTV news correspondent and has also worked as co-host of CTV’s Canada AM in the past. Reports confirm that O’Regan also works as a mental health advocate and is a friend of Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau. According to Burton, he hadn’t heard about O’Regan running before he got the call from the Telegram. He explained that “this is the first I’ve heard of this. He’d be a wonderful candidate,” adding that “well, he’s a wonderful man. You know, he’s a Newfoundlander. He’s a Labradorian. I know him because I grew up in Labrador.”

Explaining his decision to back down, Burton shared that his life was just too busy between running Remax Infinity, a small airline and two fishing lodges in Labrador. The Liberal party has yet to formally call nominations in the riding yet while the next federal election is scheduled for the fall of 2015.
