Today is the 25th anniversary of the disappearance of Kimberly McAndrew and the Integrated Major Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigation Division continues to investigate the case.

On August 12, 1989 at 4:20 p.m. 19-year-old Kimberly McAndrew left Canadian Tire at 6203 Quinpool Road in Halifax where she was employed as a cashier. There were unconfirmed reports that Kimberley was last seen at the Gardenia Flower Shop in Penhorn Mall in Dartmouth. She was identified by an employee at the flower shop as having bought a balloon and a rose. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing pleated navy slacks, a white short-sleeved “Esprit” t-shirt with red and green squares, a navy oversized cardigan, and jade green flat-heeled loafers.

We’re dedicated to relentlessly pursuing unsolved crimes in our community, whether they happened in the last few years or many years ago. We have resources dedicated to major unsolved crimes (homicides and missing persons) and put a significant amount of investigative effort into them. New technology continues to lead to advancements in forensic science, particularly with respect to DNA. Today’s crime labs are far more advanced which allows investigators to revisit how crime scenes were processed. These advancements also provide investigators with enhanced ability to analyze archived data such as video surveillance, camera and telephone records.

One of the main obstacles we face in unsolved homicides is a lack of co-operation from people who know what happened. We issue media releases on the anniversary of an unsolved major crime in the hope that a witness will break the code of silence and come forward to police directly or through the Provincial Rewards program to help further the police investigation.
