Members of Parliament have expressed deep regret after conservatives on the Commons finance committee unanimously rejected a call for a probe of the ongoing tax audits of charities by the federal government. NDP revenue critic, Murray Rankin, mentioned in his remarks on Tuesday that he is very disappointed by the outcome of the one-hour, closed-door committee meeting called to discuss his request.

Mr. Rankin mentioned that “there’s a lot of allegations swirling around” about the recent audits being conducted by Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). He stressed that the people have made very serious allegations “about the integrity and independence” of the CRA as to “whether there’s political interference or not.” It was highlighted that “all we’re looking for is accountability before the proper committee of Parliament.” He stated that “that seems to me the minimum the government can do if it’s committed to accountability and transparency — to clear the air.”

Numerous charitable organizations have raised many questions about the charities that are being scrutinized by the government, as they claim to be singled out for tax audits by the CRA. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government earmarked extra funds in 2012 for the sole purpose of investigating charities and to determine if they were abusing their charitable status by engaging in too much political activity. At the time, then-natural resources minister Joe Oliver alleged that “environmental and other radical groups” were using funding from “foreign special interest groups” in an attempt to “hijack our regulatory system” to block “good projects” to develop Canada’s natural resources.
