Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard has mentioned in his recent remarks that Montreal Police failed to do their job by not being able to stop workers from protesting against pension reforms and immorally trashing the Montreal city hall and its premises.

Addressing an unscheduled news conference on Tuesday, Mr. Couillard spoke against workers union and police. He alleged that people are surely upset to see a double-standard by the forces. He mentioned that “there cannot be two kinds of reactions to these sorts of situations” and “last night the population witnessed unacceptable acts which dishonour the significance of our institutions and lower the moral authority of our police forces.” Mr. Couillard mentioned that “threats and intimidation cannot replace real debates in society.”

Whereas on the other hand, Municipal Affairs Minister Pierre Moreau stated that Monday night’s trashing of city hall by workers accomplished nothing and “vandalism helps nothing.” The incident was highly reported on Monday and made front pages across the city. Consequently, Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre also expressed extreme anger this morning as he said that it was an attack on democracy. Meanwhile Moreau stated that the incident was “very sad” and “it’s a totally unacceptable situation.” Moreau added that “it’s deplorable to see. “There were television scenes where it was clear a union leader was suggesting and encouraging members of his union to take the city hall by storm, even directing them which door to use.”
