Liberal candidate in the St. George’s-Stephenville East byelection, Scott Reid, successfully secured his seat on Tuesday, calling it an evidence of the public’s thirst for change. According to the unofficial results from Elections Newfoundland and Labrador, Scott Reid of the Liberals acquired a total of 2,211 votes, Wally Childs of the Progressive Conservatives managed to gain 948 and Bernice Hancock of the NDP got 579 votes.

Reid mentioned that while he went door to door during the election campaign, he was reassured that people were looking for change and the feeling was very strong in some areas of the district. Reid stated that “it was actually humbling to have such support in the district.” Reid stressed that he went to every voter he could reach, listened to the people and heard what they had to say. Whereas on the other hand, Childs also admitted that people wanted change and they got it. Childs stated that he plans to hold Reid’s feet to the fire to be true to some of the things he said during the campaign.

Childs confessed that while he was campaigning, he understood that people were feeling neglected and when you’re neglected you want something different, so that’s what happened. Childs stated in his remarks that “if I’ve helped out people by just running in this campaign, then the whole exercise in democracy has been a success.” Childs alleged that politics is one of the things that was on his bucket list and despite it being an awesome experience, he is not sure if he will run again.
