Police have confirmed to be investigating a serious bus crash on a stretch of B.C.’s Coquihalla Highway that resulted in injuries to several dozens of passengers, out of which five were in serious condition. The crash site, i.e. located about 30 kilometres southwest of Merritt, was filled with ambulances and several first responders attending to the injured passengers.

According to a statement issued by RCMP Sgt. Norm Flemming, a total of 56 people were on the bus at the time of accident while on its way from the Okanagan to the Lower Mainland. All. Flemming stated that six passengers were in critical condition, although Interior Health mentioned later on Thursday that five patients were in critical condition and 10 were in serious condition. Flemming stated that “we don’t have any fatalities listed yet, and we’re just crossing our fingers and hoping for the best on that one.”

Police reported to have received a call at around 3 p.m. local time on Thursday afternoon, soon after which the crash site was crawling with first responders, involving at least 18 ambulances and six helicopters. RCMP confirmed that several civilians stopped their vehicles to help the injured. One such person was an off-duty firefighter, Terry Lipfin, who said the scene was “horrifying” and “there was a bunch of people already lying on the ground; the bus was actually still bouncing. There were people trying to climb out of the windows.” Lipfin added that “it was horrifying… it was a mess.”
