The BC Teachers’ Federation, government negotiators and specially appointed mediator, Vince Ready, are scheduled to hold another set of talks that is anticipated to begin this afternoon. Mr. Ready had previously met with union president, Jim Iker, the BCPSEA’s chief negotiator, Peter Cameron, and their bargaining teams yesterday. However, talks were called off after more than six hours of negotiations, when Ready alleged that both the sides are still very far apart.

These fresh set of negotiations have started as the deadline to get a deal done before school is supposed to start approaches. The next meeting is anticipated to start at around 1pm at the same Richmond Hotel where all parties convened earlier on Thursday and Friday. Whereas on the other hand, parents all across the province are waiting to see whether children will be back in class next week.

A mother with two kids in elementary school in Metro Vancouver, Rebecca Anderson, mentioned in her remarks that “it seems that they are kind of at a stalemate in terms of the issues.” Anderson stated that she’s not optimistic that they will go back on Tuesday, adding that “I’m not, I’ll say I’m not surprised at where they are at.” Meanwhile, another parent Kathy Findlay alleged that there is still hope. She stated that “I am optimistic that the work Vince Ready is doing is going to help to get the process moving forward. And I’m optimistic and hopeful for the teachers that they get back to work.”
