Peel Regional Police has confirmed that two pilots partaking in practice flights for this weekend’s Canadian International Air Show narrowly escaped injuries on Friday when the landing gear of their plane collapsed. Consequently, emergency services responded to the incident and arrived at the Pearson International Airport at around 1:30 p.m. and tended to the pilots.

Several jets and other aircrafts are scheduled to participate in the annual air show, running on Saturday, Sunday and Labour Day Monday. Const. Thomas Ruttan mentioned in his remarks that “it’s unclear whether the plane was landing or being taxied at the time.” A witness at the airport described the airplane to be a yellow Royal Canadian Air Force Harvard training aircraft. It was explained that “it crashed and then kind of skidded into the ditch” and that “the wheel collapsed when it landed. I think it was the last plane to land in that formation. Three came in and the fourth didn’t.”

Spokesperson for the Canadian International Air Show, Colleen McCourt, mentioned in her remarks that the show will continue as scheduled this weekend. McCourt confirmed that the landing gear was damaged but the plane was able to taxi itself back to the ramp under its own power. She alleged that “it was … a minor incident, no injuries, pilot is out and safe,” adding that “the damage is being assessed right now and there’s no impact on the service whatsoever at Pearson and the air show is scheduled to go ahead.”
