An Alberta-registered Cessna single-engine aircraft made a failed attempt to land at a tiny airport in Crawford Bay, B.C., on Saturday evening while endangering the life of the pilot and a female passenger. The plane instead ducked on the airport’s roof and soon went in flames with both pilot and female passenger inside and a tank full of fuel ready to erupt.

However, a few selfless bystanders made heroic attempts to save lives of both the pilot and passengers. One of the first persons to arrive at the scene, Paul Hindson, alleged that “I just thought, ‘Holy crap, we have to hurry.’” Hindson claimed to have just started a game of tennis with some friends when they heard the stricken plane, adding that “it was headed into the woods, and the pilot started porpoising — it looked like he was trying to avoid the trees.” Hindson owns a hotel in the small community in southeastern B.C. at Kokanee Chalets.

Consequently, the sound of the impact alarmed the entire community and triggered an immediate rescue by everyone within earshot. Hindson claims that “we got there, and it was upside down and on fire,” adding that “flames were coming from the engine and cockpit area.” A short while later, the tennis players were accompanied by others who heard the crash and immediately started trying to rescue the people trapped inside. Hindson and another rescuers managed to pull out both the pilot and passenger as the plane was nearing to explode. The pilot remains in hospital while the female passenger failed to survive.
