According to a statement issued by EMS spokesman, Stuart Brideaux, life of a hiker poorly injured after falling at Mount Burstall on Sunday was saved due to extensively detailed information medical information provided timely by a passerby. According to Brideaux, if the 911 caller had not described the condition of hiker’s injuries in detail, it would not have taken an unusual step of scrambling helicopters since the paramedic’s assessment might not have occurred timely.

First respondents confirmed that the almost 30-year-old victim fell or roughly slid 30 feet and suffered multiple traumatic injuries. EMS confirmed that they were informed about the situation at around 2:20 p.m., i.e. approximately two and a half hours after the man fell. However, Brideaux alleged that the passerby was able to tell the dispatcher enough information that an Alpine helicopter and STARS air ambulance were dispatched right away, along with a ground ambulance.

Mount Burstall is located in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, i.e. about 160 km southwest of Calgary. Brideaux stated that “this bystander happened to have limited medical training…and was able to relay some crucial information to 911 because of that.” Brideaux added that “Alpine was able to sling the hiker out…bring him to the ground unit (and STARS),” alleging that “they flew him to the Foothills (hospital in Calgary) in serious, potentially life-threatening condition.” Meanwhile, STARS spokesperson, Mike Haska, confirmed that an air ambulance lifted a patient from the Burstall Pass trail head, and that the patient remained critical when he arrived at hospital in Calgary.
