A renowned NDG staple, D.A.D.’s Bagels at 5732 Sherbrooke St., has announced to close permanently on Sunday after almost 20 years of service because the owner, Kashmir Singh Randhawa, has failed to renew its lease. The lease was not renewed because they had to make way for a neighbouring expansion of the Dollarama dollar store. Randhawa mentioned in his remarks that “there are no by-laws protecting the commercial lease in this city,” while thanking those customers who had come especially for a last taste of the mom-and-pop shop’s treats.

One of their loyal customers, Daniel Rabinovich, stated that “we were stunned, it’s very bizarre all of a sudden that it should be closing.” Whereas, another 11-year-old customer named Madeleine Rabinovich alleged that “it’s kind of sad that they’re also just doing it to make the dollar store bigger, because it’s already really big.” Customer Amanda Kellock confessed that “I found myself getting teary-eyed just talking about it, because it’s such an integral part of the community and… it’s so important to have these small businesses that aren’t just commercial institutions.”

Whereas on the other hand, Randhawa claims that his business was suffering due to some other factors as well, including a new express bus lane along Sherbrooke St. It was highlighted that loss of motorists being able to stop during morning rush hour had decreased the sales by 10 per cent. He stressed that its “not me only, all the coffee shops on this side, they are hurting very badly.”
