School board officials have predicted that teachers strike is expected to continue well into September after all chances of timey mediation were crushed and hence classes were formally cancelled for Tuesday’s scheduled opening day. Consequently, several school districts have publicly warned parents to brace for a lengthy shutdown of schools.

According to a letter addressed to parents by Surrey’s superintendent of schools, Jordan Tinney, it was mentioned that “we suggest parents make alternative arrangements for the coming week and look to the very real possibility that a resolution may take much longer.” The letter mentioned that “the disruption is especially unsettling when there appears to be no end in sight.” In addition to that, Vancouver and other districts have also sent similar letters to parents on Monday.

Head of the Vancouver school, Patti Bacchus, mentions in her letter that she is disappointed that schools wouldn’t be opening on Tuesday. Furthermore, she stated that “this isn’t good for anybody,” since it is risky for both sides. She stated that “we need to get kids in school,” adding that “but it needs to be a deal that’s fair — it can’t be another heavy-handed deal that’s going to end up in court.” Whereas on the other hand, veteran mediator Vince Ready declared an impasse Saturday after exploratory talks with the union, the B.C. Teachers’ Association and the B.C. Public Schools Employer’s Association. Ready stated that sides are still “a long, long ways apart” on class composition, benefits and wages.
