The CEO of the Centerplate who was recently entangled in a controversy related to animal rights, Desmond Hague, has announced to resign from his position after being caught kicking a puppy in a downtown Vancouver elevator on camera. The announcement was made by the Centerplate’s board of directors on Tuesday, who mentioned that Mr. Hague is being replaced by acting president and CEO Chris Verros.

The statement issued by the chairman of the board of directors for Connecticut-based Centerplate, Joe O’Donnell, mentioned that “we want to reiterate that we do not condone nor would we ever overlook the abuse of animals.” It was mentioned that “following an extended review of the incident involving Mr. Hague, I’d like to apologize for the distress that this situation has caused so many; but also thank our employees, clients and guests who expressed their feelings about this incident. Their voices helped us to frame our deliberations during this very unusual and unfortunate set of circumstances.”

The unexpected resignation has come only a week after Hague was made to donate $100,000 towards the establishment of the Sade Foundation in honour of the dog he mistreated, which was in fact being directed to aid protection and safety of animals in Vancouver. A statement released by Mr. Hague at the time stressed that he was ashamed and embarrassed about the incident, which he attributed to losing control after a “minor frustration” with a friend’s pet. Meanwhile, the SPCA openly recommended animal cruelty charges.
