A statement issued by the County of Brant OPP has confirmed that the pilot of a small airplane failed to survive after it crashed near the Brantford airport on Wednesday morning. Sources confirm that the plane crashed into a building on the west side of York Road, i.e. almost one block north of Colborne Street, at approximately 11:19 a.m. It was explained that the building, i.e. next to Confederation Freezers, has brown, metal siding and a manufactured stone base.

Whereas on the other hand, OPP has also confirmed that the pilot was the only occupant of the plane and was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the witnesses, George Ariss of Guelph, was on his way to pick up a part for his plane when he heard an explosion. He alleged that “a second later I saw a ball of fire go straight up in the air.” Ariss quickly drove his pickup to near the site of the crash, which he said was just south of Gilbert Custom Aircraft.

Giving his account of events, Ariss revealed that the plane appeared to be a biplane, but he could not say for sure. He said that “there is no question he didn’t survive,” and added that “whether he was trying to come down on the little bit of road there … I couldn’t see that far.” Ariss said the plane appeared to hit the building after bouncing off the road.
