The B.C. government has recently mentioned that it is ready to find more resources to address special needs in the classroom. However, the announcement made by the Education Minister, Peter Fassbender, on Thursday implies to bring a calculated difference between the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the union representing 26,000 support workers and education assistants who are walking the picket line with teachers.

While the provincial government nearly fails to stabilize the province’s public-school strike, Mr. Fassbender and Premier Christy Clark are perhaps offering new message as consolation for frustrated parents. The government alleged that it is ready to address the contentious matter of class composition, i.e. the number of special-needs students in each classroom. A tweet posted by B.C. Premier Christy Clark publicized her commitment to make class composition her top priority. She mentioned in a tweet posted on her Twitter feed that “more educators helping more students. BCTF or CUPE, it doesn’t matter because students’ needs come first.” Quite noticeably, the premier referred to educators, rather than teachers, which implied that the government is seeking to blunt the BCTF’s argument that more specialist teachers are needed to help students with special needs.

Mr. Fassbender mentioned in his statement on Thursday that “the first stumbling block to getting a negotiated settlement is the BCTF being realistic in their demands on wages and benefits.” He also added that “if they come into that affordability zone, is there then the ability for some give-and-take at the table on the items including class size composition, especially composition? Yes.”
