Yet another SkyTrain shutdown on Friday evening resulted in thousands of commuters being delayed once again, though the authorities claim that it was caused by people prying open the car doors and walking out onto the guideway.

A TransLink representative, Colleen Brennan, alleged that it was initially a technical problem with a train on the Surrey side that caused the train to slow down and then come to a halt just outside of Gateway Station. However, she explained “that should have been a seven to 10 minute delay. It ended up being about an hour, due to more than 100 passengers placing themselves at risk and further delaying thousands of passengers on the system. Staff had difficulty getting safe operating status for the doors illegally broken open.” Consequently, Transit Police were also involved and their representative, Anne Drennan, confirmed that “there were station attendants on scene who attempted to escort these people off the tracks. Transit officers arrived very quickly and assisted with that process. Fortunately, no one was injured.”

One of the passenger described what happened when the system was shut down, stating that “we were riding between Main Street and Commercial. We were in the middle of the tracks. It stopped four times.” There were many customers who got late for work and appointments, while others were resigned to wait on the platforms. One of the customers alleged that “I didn’t stand and listen for announcements. I just went to grab a coffee, but kept an eye on when the line was running again.”
