Vancouver Police have confirmed to be investigating a series of targeted arsons that are suspected to be linked to a gang conflict on the city’s south slope. According to a statement issued on Wednesday by Const. Brian Montague, there have been so far three arsons since Sept. 2, all of which are caused by suspects throwing Molotov cocktails at houses and garages.

Furthermore, Montague stated that in one case, the attackers missed their target and hit a neighbour’s garage. He explained that “there have been no injuries with regard to any of these fires. The neighbourhood is of course on edge,” adding that “the potential for serious injury or loss of life is very real and we want to make sure that doesn’t happen.” However, Mr. Montague highlighted that “cooperation is a challenge” during the course of investigation.

It was revealed that the first fire took place on Sept. 2 just after 4 a.m., when “the residents of a home on East 61st Avenue near Knight Street woke to a loud noise and flames inside their living room.” Whereas, the second attack took place days later at about 3:40 a.m. when the detached garage of a house on East 62nd was set ablaze. Montague added that “the third fire was set early (Tuesday) morning at about 4 a.m. at the rear of a home in the same area as the first two arsons,” explaining that “this last victim lives very close to the first two fires and investigators believe that they were not the intended target.”
