Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has announced his decision to step out of Toronto’s mayoral race as he awaits biopsy results on an abdominal tumour, while making his brother, Doug Ford, register and run in his place. Addressing reporters outside his mother’s house on Friday evening, an emotional Doug Ford mentioned that “he wanted to make sure that all of his accomplishments and hard work were not for nothing.” Doug alleged that Rob has asked him to “take the torch” while he focuses on his health.

However, Mayor Rob Ford isn’t completely out of the public eye as he has instead filed documents to run for the city council seat in his old Etobicoke North riding of Ward 2. According to a written statement by Rob Ford, he mentioned that “I’ve asked Doug to finish what we started together, so that all we’ve accomplished isn’t washed away.” This decision was made after the mayor was admitted to a hospital with abdominal pain on Wednesday. A colorectal surgeon at the city’s Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Zane Cohen, mentioned on Thursday that Rob had undergone a biopsy and that they are awaiting test results.

Whereas on the other hand, Doug stressed that “I’ve always known how much Rob loves his job,” and “this is more than a job for Rob. It’s his life’s work.” He also added that “no one here could ever replace” Rob Ford, but he wants to continue his work. Doug mentioned that “he told me our supporters need us to continue what we started.”
