The Canada Science and Technology Museum was once again sealed closed on Friday while contractors and museum officials discussed repairs and pondered ever the same possibility of moving the museum. The workers have been told not to enter the building due to the unacceptably high mould levels in the air, which were found this week inside the south wall during scheduled maintenance.

In the past, the museum has had several repairs and it has been debated for years whether to replace the museum. The current building of the museum was supposed to be a temporary one at the time of its opening in 1967, since the structure was basically a former bakery warehouse. In his remarks, the federal cabinet minister for this area, John Baird, stressed that he would love to see a new museum in five to 10 years, but money is short for the moment.

Mr. Baird stated that “obviously it’s a question of money. Were still in a deficit, working to balance the budget, so that remains fiscally the top priority,” adding that “as a local MP, the minister for the area, obviously who wouldn’t want to see a new museum? I’d be very supportive of that. I just think we have to be very realistic (that) it wouldn’t happen today or tomorrow. But at some point in the next five or 10 years we were going to need one anyway.” He pointed out that “there’s not hundreds of millions of dollars sitting around for this project.”
