A pro-teacher rally outside the Vancouver Art Gallery on Sunday met with moderate resistance by a group of parents from Richmond who showed up with anti-union signs and the situation got tense. Although the event was organized on Facebook and described as a parent-driven rally, there were two other rallies planned on Sunday too.

The rally was peaceful until a group of parents arrived from Richmond with a different message, notably against the BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF). The group referred to themselves as BC Parents’ Federation and had planned their own separate rally last week, but wanted to attend this event “to show our face in the media. We are not afraid. We just want to let people know who we are.” It was elucidated that while the group members supported the teachers and their children, they didn’t support the BCTF because it had failed to negotiate a settlement with the government. Belinda Bai from the parents’ federation alleged that “we don’t want taxpayer to pay extra money,” adding that “we think governments they have their budgets, they have to keep their budgets.”

Consequently, police officers had no other choice but to intervene when the two groups got a little out of hand and the conversations resulted in a brief shoving and swearing match. However, the rest of the rally was peaceful and continued with a march. Meanwhile, negotiations are still ongoing between the BCTF and provincial government and continued into the night on Sunday as bargaining teams met this past weekend at a hotel in Richmond with veteran mediator Vince Ready.
