Suspended senator Mike Duffy’s lawyer, Lawyer Donald, has recently mentioned in his remarks that his client wants to go to trial by the spring of 2015, i.e. months before the next federal election. This implies that it could even mean that the Prime Minister is called to testify during the election season.

During a brief court appearance on Tuesday in Ottawa, lawyer Donald Bayne and Crown attorney Jason Neubauer unitedly convinced the judge to allow a one-week delay as they have yet to decide when a trial could take place. Mr. Bayne informed the judge that “we’re working out, now, schedule logistics, so I would ask that the matter be put over one week.” Whereas the judge agreed to their preposition and delayed the hearing until Sept. 23.

In his remarks outside the court, Mr. Bayne alleged that Mr. Duffy wants to go to trial as soon as possible. Upon inquiry that could it be before the October, 2015, election, Mr. Bayne replied that “absolutely, it could,” but straightforwardly clarified that the motivations were not political. He elucidated that “let me make clear. This isn’t a political case, this is a criminal case. And it’s going to be conducted professionally. The very strong judiciary in the Ontario Court ‎of Justice will not allow this case to be turned into a political circus, and we certainly don’t intend to conduct the matter that way.” He stressed that “…this will be [Mr. Duffy’s] first opportunity for a complete airing of all the evidence before an impartial tribunal.”
